Time, patience and panoramic views

Well I’ve been served amazing food where the chef found it absolutely necessary to whittle an amazingly detailed eagle attacking a wooden log or some other inanimate object. You look at it and think “WOW”, and not “Yummy!” which I believe is what you would expect and indeed hope for when being served food, even if it is just a carrot. For the life of me I could never figure out why the kitchen slave had to go to all that trouble.
Then again that could be said of many things. Why do people go to so much trouble. Why do people slave hours over a stylesheet to get it pixel perfect. Pride? Obsessive need for perfection? I can only guess.

But in why in heavens name would you carve a building out from a mountain. This is no carrot but very impressive none the less.
