Photo’s in Flash™

I had a similar experience with that site. I mean, it's great and all, but what I really wanted to do was look at the photos and it was a bit hard to get at them.

I've seen some Flash photo sites that are great, and some that aren't - this one leans toward the "aren't" side, but damn the photos are good. It's almost a shame to dilute them with all that extra crap.

This is one of the reasons I started my Flash For The Future site. I have a client who does prop design and art direction and it's some really killer work. He asked me straight up for a Flash portfolio and I had to convince him that that wasn't the best idea.

He *needs* those photos to be accessible and there is no real design benefit to place them into a Flash site. I mean I get it for a personal or portfolio site (if it's done well) but for anyone who wants to actually use their site to make money and win clients I don't really get it. I'm sure there are exceptions, but it's pretty scary when clients come to me wanting "a Flash" site.

If you think a complicated Flash movie with all kinds of movement and all that is what you need to get work as a photographer or some such, you might want to rethink your actual work and become a Flash designer.

Flash can be used to help present photos in a way that is unobtrusive. Hell, it can really ad something if done well. Unfortunately this is hardly the usual.

No, it's better to sit down an assess the goals of the site and *then* talk about using Flash or not. And if Flash is an option, think about how to use it to add value - not distract and annoy.

photography has been a part of my life for over 25 years now and i always found it difficult to display my photos in html with a certain suspense ... i tried to create a very minimalistic web page for my photography based on flash, just using little help of the programme itself for the transition of the photo's. the only problem i encountered with my site was the long loading time when displaying the images in high res. since i reduced them in file size, it is working just fine even without a preloader...

sorry, the first part of my post got lost somehow... anyhow, i share the same view as keith in his post, amongst other things i find the thumbnails are very hard to get to. it is a very well designed site with neat effects, but the actual subject, the photography and klotte's excellent images, stand in the background... i like to browse through sites of different photographers, but on the KLOTTE site i spent very little time because of the navigation...

hello there,

i am one of the assistants of mr kotte and was very much involved in the solving of the "navigation problem". we wanted to keep the form of navigation as it is and at the same time ensure usability. so we decided to stop the scrolling of the menu bar when the mouse is not on it. in addition to that, we added a slideshow option and forward/backward buttons. i think that the usability improved very much though these changes.
